I think we lost to Sawston last week? Oh well no mad protests calling for the managers head just yet! After that game we had a cup game against Buckden to deal with which talking the weather into account was a good victory, 5 – 1 in the wind and rain was very well done. So onto Hemingford on Tuesday night where a win was very important to keep level pegging with Chatteris. After beating them in the cup a few weeks ago a repeat performance was quite likely although Hemingford started the game proving there not going to be push over’s to any team this season. The first 20 minutes was good with both teams attacking well, then just after the 20 minute mark we went in front thanks to a diving header from Justin (yes I know what your thinking, he must of slipped!!) Justin got the second 10 minutes later, didn’t see this one, to busy nattering with Robbo’s van blocking half the pitch!! Dan Edwards put us 3 up just before the break, again missed this one due to the van but sure it was a cracking goal! The second half was a very on sided game with us being 3 up, lots of chances were being made, Justin then put us 4 up and bagged his hat-trick with a very well taken goal, no match ball though I’m afraid, you have to pay for those, or find your own out of the ditch! Hemingfords keeper made some excellent saves towards the end, the two from Adam Cousins were excellent. Yet again another good performance from everyone, really starting to look like a very good team, and with players like Phil, Rosco and Ross all still waiting to play after or because of injuries it’s all looking good. The 1st team now starts a stint of 5 away games in a row against Great Paxton. The Reserves didn’t have a game last week, they were due to play Lakenheath but was called off, hopefully they can build on their win against St Ives Rangers and beat Sutton on Saturday.

Castle Camps 0 - 4 Somersham Town. 24th October 2009

Goals: Tommy Evans (58), Steven Robson (33), Joe Thompson (27, 79),  .

Castle Camps on Saturday . . . well right in the middle of nowhere, it was an interesting trip last year and this week was much of the same, the changing rooms are still in as wonderful condition as ever and the pitch looked like someone had been joy riding in a golf buggy.  The game started quite poorly with neither team able to take control, saying that we were certainly showing more signs or troubling the Castle Camps goal. After 27 minutes Joe Thompson put us ahead with a well struck shot. Robbo volleyed in the second just after the half hour, which is how it stayed until the break. The second half was a very on sided affair which see the Castle Camps goalkeeper kept very busy, we could of got ten! Tommy Evans who was playing in an unfamiliar strikers role got the 3rd, then after 70 minutes Joe scored his second of the game with an excellent chip over the goalkeeper, 4 – 0. That’s how the game finished and thanks to Debden beating Hardwick (Yes JC beat Hardwick, apologies accepted) puts us back to the top of the table and extends the unbeaten league start to 8 games. The Reserves played Buckden at home, and unfortunately lost the game 4 – 1, Glyn Cooke getting the goal. Hemmingford away in the cup next week and the Reserves travel away to Littleport Town Reserves, lets hope they get back to winning ways!

After 2 weeks of cup games and 1 week off we finally got back to league action. Still mystified as to how we lost the game against RHS United (and the Ref) we had Cherry Hinton to play, they have had a decent start to the season so it wasn’t going to be a push over. With Hardwick and a few other teams all winning we are now playing catch up so 3 points against Cherry Hinton was a must! It was generally a very good game to watch, both playing some good football, Ross put us ahead after heading well from Robbo’s free kick. Cherry Hinton equalized pretty much straight away after everyone decided to go to sleep for a minute or two. Just before half time Robbo put us back in front 2 – 1, that is how it stayed until the break. The second started and with JC banging on every 5 minutes trying to find out if Wolves would manage to get a result this week we played quite well and didn’t really look in to much bother, Mark Staniland scored after about 70 minutes to put us 3 - 1 ahead and pretty secure all 3 points. A few changes were made towards the end, Nick Waters coming on up front for the last few minutes, then in injury time sub Alex Bagnall scored to finish the game off 4 - 1 and a very good afternoon for all, except for Liverpool of course, Matt I think we need some beach balls for our next home game!
The Reserves played Fenstanton hoping the could kick start there season after a good win over AFC Fletton the week before, with no goalkeeper at the minute they called upon the goalkeeping skills of Jon Ives. The game finished 1 - 1 which isn’t a bad result at all, Adam Clayton got the goal. 1st team is away to Castle Camps, and the Reserves host Buckden.

Beneveland Cup
Brampton 0 - 1 Somersham Town. 3rd October 2009

Team:
Peter Gibbs, Tommy Evans, Mark Staniland, Richard Hamill, Nick Kay, Joe Thompson, Adam Taylor, Jason Morris, Steven Robson, Justin Ives, Nick Mead (off for Adam Cousins: 75)
Subs:
Adam Cousins

Goals:
Steven Robson (90)

It was cold, windy, no cups of tea at half time so you can imagine it not being the most fun to stand and watch the game. The football wasn’t a great deal better either, now that was down to the conditions to be fair to both teams. We never really looked in any danger of conceding but likewise didn’t look too dangerous in front of goal ourselves; the final ball or shot wasn’t quite good enough. Meady was playing his last game before going into the Navy and the manager done the right thing bringing him off 15 minutes from time so he could get a standing ovation from the 10 strong crowd, well something like that anyway. We were getting closer and closer to extra time which I don’t think would of gone down well with anyone especially with JC moaning about Wolves losing yet again! But luckily Robbo grabbed us the winner right on full time! So it wasn’t pretty but yet another win to add to the excellent start to the season so another well done to everyone. Without playing a league game for 2 weeks and teams around us in the league doing so we have a bit of catching up to do. Hopefully we can extend the unbeaten run next week away at R H S United in the league cup.

Wisbech Town Reserves 1 - 3 Somersham Town. 19th September 2009

Team: Michael Cafferkey, Tommy Evans, Ross Fairley (off for Andy Rossi: 83), Peter Gibbs, Richard Hamill, Justin Ives, Nick Kay, Steven Robson (off for Nick Mead: 65), Adam Taylor, Joe Thompson, Nicholas Waters (off for Mark Staniland: 55)
Subs: Nick Mead, Andy Rossi, Mark Staniland

Goals: Steven Robson (7, 50) Justin Ives (66)

Wisbech Town Reserves away was on the menu for Saturday, not the greatest place to go although it was a lovely day perfectly set for a great game and Rosco was back!! We decided to make it hard for ourselves going behind very quickly, think most of the team were still back in Somersham at that point. This lead didn’t last long and just as the home manager had finished having a little dig at PT Steven Robson equalised, nothing needed to be said that time. Chances were exchanged between both teams up until half time, going into the break at 1 - 1. Withn 5 minutes of the restart Robbo got his second of the game to put us infront leaving the locals screaming for offside, of course that was never the case! Ross Fairley then had his goal disallowed for offside which am sure was impossible due to basics common sense but who are we to argue with the officials, we don’t need to when we have Matthew on the side line fresh from his first half linesman duties. That goal would of made the game a lot more comfortable but that wasn’t the case so we had to dig in and carry on, Wisbech pushed for an equaliser but we were never to bothered, just after 65 minutes we were awarded a penalty which Justin Ives put away nicely, 6 goals in 6 for him now. The game was then pretty comfortable from then on, Nick Mead came of the bench to replace Robbo in what could be one of his last appearances before going off to the Navy, although he was put up top which could be the only decision we could possible challenge the manager on so far this season. Rosco came on with just under 10 minutes to go which topped the afternoon off so hopefully see him in the team a lot more. PT then exchanged some banter we’ll say with some moaning locals; I don’t think they were too happy with him :). Anyway the game finished 3 - 1 which as a great result, 6 out of 6 and now sitting pretty at the top of the league, which is a fantastic job by the manager, and all the players, keep it up!!!

Chatteris Town 1 - 2 Somersham Town. 5th September 2009

Team: Daniel Edwards (off for Chris Parker: 55), Tommy Evans, Ross Fairley (off for Alex Bagnall: 85), Peter Gibbs, Richard Hamill, Justin Ives, Stephen Poore (C), Adam Taylor, Graeme Thackray, Joe Thompson, Nicholas Waters
Subs: Alex Bagnall, David Bagnall, Chris Parker

Goals: Adam Taylor (13), Justin Ives (36)

So to our first away game of the season hoping to carry on the excellent start with PT at the helm, Chatteris were the only other unbeaten team left and also hadn’t conceded a goal so had all the makings for an excellent game.
We started well and got what we deserved after 13 minutes when Tiny (Adam Taylor) swivelled in the box to bury into the bottom corner 1-0. We continued to play good football, and after 36 minutes we got a free kick 25 yards out after matey centre half tried to swap shirts with Justin (get him a watch). Justin stepped up and with a bit of luck/help from the wall found the bottom corner 2-0. That’s how it stayed till half time.
We knew they would throw everything at us in the second half and that’s exactly what they did, we couldn’t really get into the game at all, but thanks to some excellent defending led by Steve Poore we cleared the ball off the line 3 times!! It didn’t look  like they were going to find a way though until they were awarded a very soft penalty. Would they score it, NO CHANCE, not with Peter Gibbs the penalty master between the sticks, great save!
Deep into injury time they found the back of the net with a great 30 yard strike which to be honest was no less than they deserved. All Justin had to do from kickoff was: A: keep the ball. B: knock it into the corner. Did neither, just kicked it straight to them, typical striker. We managed to hold on until the full time whistle. Excellent lads great result and already opened up a 3 point gap at the top. 4 out of 4, long may it continue!

Somersham Town 4 - 2 Castle Camps. 1st September 2009

Team: Peter Gibbs, Tommy Evans, Ross Fairley (0ff for David Bagnall: 86), Richard Hamill, Justin Ives, Nick Mead, Chris Parker (off for Nick Waters: 65), Stephen Poore (C), Steven Robson (0ff for Richard Marsden: 76), Joe Thompson, Oliver Verral
Subs: David Bagnall, Richard Marsden, Nick Waters

Booked: Adam Taylor (50), Oliver Verral (70)
Goals: Joe Thompson (23. 74), Justin Ives (88), Ollie Verral (39)

This was the last of the first 3 home games so another win would round off an excellent start to the season. Castle Camps were a tough test last season especially over their place, which was a very entertaining game. So onto this one, we got off to a terrible start going 1 - 0 down, the lead was short lived and Joe Thompson equalised with an excellent left foot strike into the top corner. Ollie Verral then put us in front with a great header GET IN! (As Justin put it). Then we took control of the game playing some excellent stuff, the 3rd goals was very well worked with some great first time passing between Ross and Justin who then put it through to Joe who dinked it over the keeper, great goal!! At 3 - 1 we then sat back a bit which let the visitors get back intro the game, they got a goal back to make it 3 - 2 and a bit of a tighter finish. We then got another goal to win the game thanks to Justin who got the ball just inside their half, spotted the keeper of his line and struck it from 40 yards to fly in over the keeper. The game finished 4 - 2 so 9 points from the first 3 games cant ask for more than that!

Somersham Town 1 - 0 Brampton.  25th August 2009
Team: Gareth Bridges, Tommy Evans, Ross Fairley (off for Chris Parker: 74), Richard Hamill, Justin Ives, Stephen Poore (C), Steven Robson, Adam Taylor, Joe Thompson Oliver Verral , Nicholas Waters (off for Nick Mead (75)
Subs: Daniel Edwards, Nick Mead, Chris Parker

Booked: Adam Taylor (50), Oliver Verral (70)
Goals: Richard Hamill (80)

Brampton is always a very tough game and both teams are always desperate to get one over on the other. This game was no exception, both teams played very well and was a hard fought game, few chances were made but the game still remained goalless. The game was getting closer and closer towards the end with neither team able to brake the deadlock, Brampton at this time would of been more then happy to walk away with a draw. We on the other hand didn’t want that and wanted our second home win. Then with 10 minutes to go Richard Hamill scored an absolute peach to put us in the lead, probably no less than we deserved. That’s the way it stayed, 2 out of 2 and 6 points, good start!!

Somersham Town 3 - 1 Milton. 18th August 2009
Team: Gareth Bridges, Michael Cafferkey, Daniel Edwards (off for Jason Morris, 50), Tommy Evans, Richard Hamill, Justin Ives (off for Nick Waters, 70), Philip Light (off for Ross Fairley, 55), Stephen Poore (C), Steven Robson, Adam Taylor, Joe Thompson
Subs: Jason Morris, Nick Waters, Ross Fairley

Bookings: Joe Thompson (70)
Goals: Justin Ives (8, 20), Phil Light (33)

So another season has begun, and after a decent pre season everyone was hoping for a good result in the first league game against newly promoted Milton. New manager Paul Taylor is now at the helm, a with him a host of new players but still some old faces from last seasons team which is good to see. With Matthew pulling his normal going on holiday just as the season is starting trick JC was left to keep the ship afloat but managed to get everything ready, he even hung out the kit for them!!!
Anyways on to the game, a decent looking team took the field and immediately got the on the scoreboard when we were awarded a penalty after just 8 minutes when Daniel Edwards was brought down, Justin Ives stepped up and slotted in into the corner, excellent start!! This lead didn’t last long as Milton went straight down from kick off and equalized. We pushed on after the equalizer with some very good play and some good chances were created. On 20 minutes we were awarded another penalty this time Joe Thompson was brought down, Justin stepped up again and went for power this time and we were 2 - 1 up! We were now in control of the game and just after the half hour another break down the right from Justin who crossed excellently to the back post for Phil Light to head home (yes head), 3  1!! And that’s the way it stayed until half time.

The second half was more of the same; we had the better of the ball for long spells and never really looked in to much trouble. The game ended 3 -1 so an excellent start and hopefully a sign of more to come. The only thing that spoilt a great start to the season was the injury to Phil who has broken his collarbone, lets all hope he makes a quick recovery!!
Next game at home to Brampton, Tuesday 25th Aug, Kick off 7.45 pm.
